NEW DELHI: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Wednesday that the party has agreed to form a pre-poll alliance with Congress for the upcoming assembly elections in Tripura. The alliance is likely to jointly announced by Congress and CPM over the weekend. Congress leader Mukul Wasnik, the senior observor for Tripura polls, and Yechury were in Agartala, where the CPM chief made the announcement.
Yechury said a seat-sharing formula will be evolved on the basis of “ground realities” and will keep in mind that the “broadest mobilisation of secular forces” is achieved in order to defeat BJP. He added that the CPM state committee is in favour of the tribal TIPRA Motha party — led by Tripura Royal family scion and Congress rebel Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman — being part of the pre-poll alliance. The state elections are due in February.
“We consider the coming polls to be very crucial not only for Tripura, but also for the sake of democracy, the rule of law and the Constitution. They are important in the context of the Northeast, India, development and for national politics,” Yechury said.
CPM, he said, believes BJP must be stopped from forming the next government in Tripura, and that the Left’s priority to give people a better life and to maintain the balance between diverse sections of the population align with the shared goals of both Congress and TIPRA Motha.
While Congress is on board for the pre-poll alliance with Left, TIPRA Motha, which is also being wooed by BJP for its captive tribal votebank, has not, so far stated its alliance preferences, maintaining its demand for the formation of ‘Greater Tipraland’.
Asked whether CPM supports Greater Tipraland, Yechury said, “In order to defend secularism, we shall unite with all forces who are willing to come forward to defend secularism.”
CPM state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury said TIPRA Motha’s demand is within the constitutional framework. “We have had a dialogue with them. We are looking for a respectable understanding to liberate the people of Tripura from the reins of terror.”
