NEW DELHI: A total of 8.6 lakh candidates have registered for the JEE (Main) 2023 January session, down by over 6,000 aspirants from the 2022 July session.
Male aspirants continue to dominate, accounting for over 6 lakh, or nearly 70%, of the registered candidates. However, for the first time, women account for over 30% of the candidates, although the increase in absolute numbers is marginal compared to 2022, i.e., from 2.5 lakh to 2.6 lakh.
Category-wise, the percentage of general candidates has dropped from last year, from 41.8% to 38.3% this time. On the other hand, the percentage of candidates is up from 35.7% to 37.1% for the OBC category and from 9% to 11.6% for the general-economically weaker section (GEN-EWS) category.

State-wise, at 1,03,039, or nearly 12% of total registrations, Maharashtra leads with the highest number of aspirants, followed by UP at 99,714 (11.6%) and Andhra Pradesh at 91,799 (10.6%). Only two other states — Telangana (86,840) and Rajasthan (59,641) — have more than 50,000 registrations.
Among cities, Delhi leads with 36,530 aspirants, followed by Hyderabad/Secunderabad (32,246) and Kota (24,253).
The entrance test for admission to engineering, architecture and planning undergraduate courses in centrally-funded institutions like NITs and IIITs as well as the eligibility test for JEE (Advanced) for admission to IITs will commence from Tuesday.
While the National Testing Agency (NTA) in its December notification stated January 31 was the last date of exam, the latest notification issued Saturday said there will be no test on January 27 and the exam will be on February 1 for Paper 1 (for BTech/ BE programmes).
According to NTA, the test will be conducted in 290 cities across the country and 18 cities outside India, including Washington DC, Moscow, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai. The exam will be conducted in 13 languages – English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
The computer-based multiple-choice test (except for Paper 3) will be conducted in two sessions each day. Paper 1 is for BTech/ BE programmes, Paper 2 for bachelor’s in architecture and Paper 3 is for bachelor’s in planning. Of the total candidates, 21,551 have registered for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 while 16,780 aspirants have registered for all three papers. More than 8.2 lakh candidates have registered for Paper 1.
The second session of JEE (Main) will be conducted from April 6 to 12, 2023.
