Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju was born on 20th January 1940 in Mogalthur, West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. After completing his education, he worked as a journalist for some time. Later he entered the film industry as a lead actor in 1966 with the film ‘Chilaka Gorinka’, he is also very popular as a villain.
He won Rashtrapati awards for Best acting in 1977, 1978 and Nandi awards for the years 1977 and 1984. He received 4 Filmfare awards for his performances in ‘Amaradeepam'(1977), ‘Bobbili Brahmanna'(1984), ‘Tandra Paparayudu'(1986) and ‘Dharmaatmudu'(1983).
In 2006, he received the Filmfare South Lifetime Achievement Award. His films ‘Bhakta Kannappa’ and ‘Bobbili Brahmanna’ are very popular even today which brought him a good name and fame. He is the owner of Gopi Krishna Movies.
He also entered Politics and served as Union Minister during the late and former Prime Minister Vajpayee’s regime.
Krishnam Raju has a wife Shyamaladevi and daughters Sai Praseedha, Sai Prakeerti and Sai Pradeepti. Popular Pan-India actor Prabhas is his nephew (son of his younger brother Uppalapati Suryanarayana Raju).
His body will be reportedly brought to his residence after 12:00 noon. His funeral will reportedly take place on Monday afternoon, said the family members.
